What Is the Purpose of Land Grading?

HomeBlogWhat Is the Purpose of Land Grading?

When it comes to construction or landscaping on your property, there are a number of steps that need to take place before your project can begin in earnest. One of the most important parts of the preparation process is land grading, which is the process of leveling out the land and creating the proper slope.

What Is the Purpose of Land Grading?

While land grading is essential, many people don’t know what it is or what it’s for. Essentially, the main purposes of land grading are as follows:

  • Creating an Even Surface – Land naturally has small or large changes in elevation that are not conducive to construction or many landscaping projects. You need a flat, even surface to build on and ensure the proper foundation. Land grading is accomplished by leveling the ground using bulldozers, skid steers, or other machinery. With an even surface to work with, you open up your construction and landscaping possibilities.
  • Ensuring the Appropriate Slope – Land grading isn’t all about making the land flat; it’s actually about making it even while also creating slopes. While you can create slopes for aesthetic reasons, their primary purpose is to ensure proper drainage. The land should slope so that water drains away from the base of your home or other structures, not toward it, without necessarily being visible.
